Action, Biography, Historical Drama, War
The titular protagonist of this 2008 Norwegian drama was a fabled leader of the resistance against the Nazi occupation. Though something of a national event, the film drew criticism from historians who said it overstated the glories of Manus's career and the competence, unity, and breadth of the Norwegian underground. American viewers with no dog in that fight are more likely to be underwhelmed by the TV-standard production values, the home-team naivete of the screenplay, and the distracting resemblance of star Aksel Hennie's resemblance to SCTV's Dave Foley. Codirectors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg display a singular lack of talent for extracting suspense from the team's sabotage operations. In subtitled Norwegian and German.
