Fresh Blood (Domino), the new album from Virginia singer-songwriter Matthew E. White, is down-comforter pop-rock. Singing in a half whisper that’s both coy and vibrant, White plays the role of a soul crooner who has abandoned belting out lyrics so that he can instead pretend to murmur secrets into a lover’s ear. With a bit of magic and a lot of finesse, he evokes a one-on-one intimacy within big, lush, and buoyant compositions. The hair-raising horns, strings, and keys are devices meant for a grander stage, but they simultaneously feel like they could be played in the comfort of your living room. Fresh Blood remains playful and alluring even as White wades into romantic despair on a track like “Holy Moly”—and his musical affectations help cushion crushing subjects. —Leor Galil
