Who knew there’s such a thing as a 23+ bar? Well, there isn’t really—as far as I can tell, Matilda is the only bar in the city and one of just a handful in the country to have come up with this rule (presumably to keep obnoxious DePaul undergrads at bay). Of course, they also installed almost wall-to-wall flat-screen TVs in the back room, so I think it’s more or less a wash. Still, they’ve got a pretty decent tap beer list, and service on a Sunday evening was friendly and prompt. That combined with interesting decor—maybe a little bizarre, but definitely interesting—makes it one of the better options in a neighborhood that’s not exactly teeming with good (read: not annoying) bars. —Julia Thiel
