Material Re-Issue, Hushdrops, Redgrave

When: Sat., Dec. 31, 8 p.m. 2011
In one sense, the story of Material Issue is among indie rock's tragedies. A tight, sweet power-pop trio formed in Chicago in 1985, they scored a major-label contract in 1990 but fell between the cracks of the zeitgeist and never really became stars, except in the hearts of locals—and their career ended decisively in 1996, when front man and principal songwriter Jim Ellison committed suicide. Yet musically speaking, no one can deny they had a damn good run—their debut album, International Pop Overthrow (from which the multicity power-pop festival takes its name), holds up better in 2011 than anything by most of the "hip" and "timely" acts who were competing with Material Issue for the public's affections. The surviving original members—drummer Mike Zelenko and bassist Ted Ansani (whose own band, the Ted Ansani Project, displays his songwriting skills) reunited as Material Re-Issue earlier this year for the IPO fest and Taste of Chicago; they claim that this New Year's Eve show will be their last. —Monica Kendrick The Hushdrops and Redgrave open. $40, $35 in advance.
