Matchbox | Chicago Reader

The air conditioner is broken in the eponymous “matchbox,” the sweltering apartment in which Yiannis Economidis's 2003 family screamfest is set. The plot centers on a restaurant owner who abuses relatives and employees (“I'll fucking kill you,” he tells his wife). Eventually his aggression comes back to him in the form of a revelation about his marriage that stuns him into silence—at which point his son takes over, heaping insults on an employee. Intense close-ups and jump cuts trap us in the characters' space, intensifying the tirades but offering little insight into their significance. In Greek with subtitles. 82 min.
