In this dark comedy from Water People Theater (originally performed in Spanish in Venezuela with a cast of seven instead of four), playwright Rebeca Alemán applies telenovela logic to Samuel Beckett—or at least that's how I like to think of it. The extended sketches in this upbeat if morbid show foam with melodrama, and in her parts Alemán seductively channels the manic enthusiasm of a Spanish TV host. Yet the campiness undermines the tragicomic attitude toward death and prevents the gallows humor from hanging together. Alternating between silly fantasies of the afterlife and straightforward scenes of grief, the play doesn't have too much to say about the absurdity either of dying or of being dead ("To live? To die? Same shit."). —Jena Cutie
