In his 1998 academic essay “The Joy Fuck Club,” University of California professor Darrell Hamamoto argued that “a Yellow porno practice can help recuperate a sexuality that has been distorted by the internalization of core racist values and beliefs that reach into the depths of individual psychology.” To prove his point and encourage a sense of virility among Asian men, he decided to shoot a porn video with two Asians: Yellowcaust: A Patriot Act (2003, 11 min.) shows Chun Lee and Layla going at it every which way in a hotel room as subtitles flash Asian-American political factoids. It screens on the same program with Jame Hou's video Masters of the Pillow (2004, 60 min.), which documents the shoot and calls on Asian-American artists and scholars to make the dubious argument for equal smut.
