Masada: Live at Tonic

This no-frills concert film, shot on video by Antonio Ferrera at the New York club Tonic in 1999, captures a particularly strong performance by saxophonist John Zorn's quartet Masada—with trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Greg Cohen, and drummer Joey Baron. The leader's tunes and the band performances combine Jewish scales with the compositional style and group sound of Ornette Coleman's classic quartet. But the sound quality is so-so and the camerawork is flat; it's not like being there (2004). 68 min.
