Documentary, Music documentary
Following aborted attempts by Martin Scorsese and Jonathan Demme, director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) delivers an epic documentary on reggae legend Bob Marley. The project had the full support of Marley’s estate, and there are talking head interviews with just about every major figure in his life who’s still around: his mother; his wife, Rita; his eldest son, Ziggy; bandmate Bunny Wailer; Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. Marley’s music carpets the movie wall to wall, and there’s some dynamic performance footage. Macdonald supplies some interesting and novel details about the musician’s life and art, though the movie’s narrative arc and documentary methods are totally predictable and the expansive 144-minute running time may exhaust all but the most rabid fans.
