Mark Kozelek, Advance Base

When: Mon., Oct. 1, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $20
Singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek has spent his career finding fresh ways to combine his plaintive murmur with downcast instrumentals. His impressive discography includes six albums in the 90s and early 00s with morose and folky slowcore band Red House Painters and What's Next to the Moon, a moving solo record of stripped-down Bon Scott-era AC/DC covers. For the past decade Kozelek has been the main force behind Sun Kil Moon, releasing another half-dozen albums of warm, intimate folk, but the band sounds stretched a bit thin on this year's Among the Leaves (Caldo Verde)—some of its 17 tracks definitely qualify as filler. Fortunately there are standouts too: on "Track Number 8," a free-associative number that collects Kozelek's thoughts about songwriting, he invokes a few musical martyrs (Elliott Smith, Mark Linkous) and complains somewhat ironically about heaping too many tunes onto an album. Kozelek's willingness to bare his broken creative process to the world ends up turning a song about his failure to write great songs into something intimate and bittersweet—its surprising emotional heft is exactly the sort of thing that makes Sun Kil Moon's best material work. —Leor Galil Advance Base opens.
