Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House

Rated PG-13 · 103 minutes · 2017

Biography, Drama, Historical Drama
"No one can possibly know as much as I know," snaps Mark Felt (Liam Neeson), the veteran FBI agent who leaked critical details of the Watergate scandal to the Washington Post, in this informative but clumsy biopic. Writer-director Peter Landesman (Concussion) presents Felt as a diehard bureau man who, passed over for promotion after the death of J. Edgar Hoover, waged a covert war against the FBI's new leader, L. Patrick Gray (an enjoyably slimy Marton Csokas), to expose the illegal activities of the Nixon White House. Only at the movie's climax, after a soapy subplot in which Felt and his hardened wife (Diane Lane) search for their missing hippie daughter—possibly in cahoots with the Weather Underground!—does Landesman touch on Felt's own illegal activity ordering secret break-ins as part of the COINTELPRO operation, which Hoover had created to harass and surveil left-wing political groups.
