Mark Curry is best known as the star of ABC's tame 90s sitcom, Hangin' With Mr. Cooper, but his stand-up isn't exactly family-friendly—unless maybe your sainted grandmother greets you by bellowing, "How ya doin'? Yes, motherfuckers!" Curry does manically paced observational humor with the kind of pitch-perfect delivery that takes years to master. Even when veering into the black-folks-do-this-white-folks-do-that gambit—which can be funny and insightful from a Richard Pryor, or, in the wrong hands, embody much of what's wrong not only with contemporary stand-up comedy but American culture as a whole—Curry more often than not avoids easy laughs and finds honest humor. And like Pryor, he's unafraid to use comedy as cathartic therapy: even a freak accident in 2006 that left him burned and severely depressed wasn't off-limits as fodder. —Brian Costello
