Re: “Why can't we all just get along nostalgically?

I'm with Charlie on this one. Mr. de Vinck's essay was only a somewhat more eloquent version of those ridiculous internet forwards filled with hand-wringing for "an entire generation that has grown up not knowing how to read an analog clock or tie a shoelace" in this digital-and-velcro filled modern age. This perspective presumes not only that any other version of childhood is inferior to the writer's, but also that "kids today" don't read and have no way of knowing about the wonderful world they missed. I hope I am more clear-eyed about the world I grew up in, and the world I live in today. I like to think my husband and I managed to give our girls a better childhood than we experienced, and hope they're able to do the same for our grandchildren.
