It’s been eight years since Maria Rita, daughter of Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina and keyboardist and arranger Cesar Camargo Mariano, has been in Chicago—in 2006 she gave an ingratiating performance at HotHouse. Her star has continued to rise at home, and while she can’t match her mother’s power, elasticity, and rhythmic invention, she’s displayed a similar versatility. In 2012 she dared to take on Regina’s legacy with Redescobrir (WEA International), a live recording of 28 songs sung by Regina that mixes samba, MPB, jazz, and full-bodied ballads. Rits makes the material her own with energetic arrangements that give the material a contemporary flair, and the album earned her a seventh Latin Grammy. For this rare stateside trip, on which she’s visiting just six cities, she shakes things up again: she’s performing only with pianist Tiago Costa, surveying songs from across her decade-plus career as well as revisiting her mother’s music. Rita promises to have a new album out sometime this spring. —Peter Margasak
