Japanese horror director Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on) riffs on urban legends and the paranormal in this disturbing 2004 feature about a TV cameraman (Shinya Tsukamoto, creator of Tetsuo) who records a horrific suicide in the Tokyo subway. Haunted by his footage, he returns to the scene of the tragedy and discovers a web of tunnels beneath the train tracks that mirrors the paranoid fantasies of 40s pulp writer Richard Shaver. During his subterranean expedition the cameraman encounters a nude woman in chains, and after he frees the mute stranger, she begins to take over his life. Madness, vampirism, and murder all occupy Shimizu's surreal landscape, lending to the mundane face of the city a most sinister aspect. In Japanese with subtitles. 92 min.
