Being versatile while remaining identifiable is a calling card for guitarist Marc Ribot. The fierce improviser has deftly brought his raunchy tone to projects helmed by folks as disparate as Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Wilson Pickett, and John Zorn. His latest recording, Live at the Village Vanguard (Pi), nominally finds him in jazz mode, leading a stormy trio with bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Chad Taylor. The project—which originally included the late trumpeter Roy Campbell Jr.—began as a tribute to saxophonist Albert Ayler, but the repertoire has since expanded to include tender readings of standards like “Ol’ Man River” and “I’m Confessin’ (That I Love You)” as well as scorching incantations by John Coltrane. Even the group’s version of Ayler’s “The Wizard” begins with a raucous two-beat country attack. Tonight Ribot makes a rare solo appearance in which anything is fair game. Part of his performance will include improvisations to the guitarist’s personal collection of eight- and 16-mm animations found in thrift stores. —Peter Margasak
