A few years ago Kaspar Hauser front man Thomas Comerford began writing relatively quiet solo material to occupy his time during lulls in the group’s schedule. He just released his second consecutive solo album, II (Strange Weather), and he’s clearly found a sweet spot, unencumbered by a rock band. That’s not to say Comerford’s solo material is stripped-down: on the new record he leads a five-piece, with guests including Kent Lambert (Roommate) and Sam Wagster (Cairo Gang), and the results are far more ambitious and elegant than Kaspar Hauser’s scrappy tunes. The arrangements don’t call attention to themselves, though—they exist to support Comerford’s soulful baritone croon, which swerves confidently through the songs. The album feels like a time capsule from an alternate past, as though a band of 70s Nashville malcontents had learned to harness the beauty of David Bowie in his prime. This isn’t classic rock, but it feels like something classic indeed. —Peter Margasak
