"Surface Patterns," which takes up side one of Man Forever's new LP, Pansophical Cataract (Thrill Jockey), begins as simplicity itself: two drummers play the same steady, rapid pattern on the same drum. But soon more and more drummers enter, broadening the pattern into a kind of spattering, pulsating barrage, and layers of droning organ, low-end feedback, and sympathetic vibrations pile up in an inexorable tsunamilike surge. This is body music that you'll feel to your core—and in concert it's even more massive. Not only can a single piece last more than half an hour, but Man Forever's ranks swell with local musicians and even fans; everyone who preordered the album by May 20 was entered in a contest, and five winners will be invited to the closest stop on the tour to play the organ onstage with the group. Besides bandleader John "Kid Millions" Colpitts, who also drums with Oneida, tonight Man Forever will include drummers Michael Zerang, Nithin Kalvakota, and Joe Wong; bassist Douglas McCombs; and guitarists Doug Kaplan and Steve Krakow, aka Plastic Crimewave. —Bill Meyer McCombs's band Brokeback and Bitchin' Bajas open.
