Director Vitaly Melnikov's quiet 1969 drama opens a window onto Soviet life of the period. A sensitive young man brings a nicely wrapped birthday gift home to his mother, only to find she's out courting with her boyfriend in the desolate construction site near their apartment block. The son instinctively hates the suitor, rebuffs his offer of friendship, and runs away. The family's cramped apartment, the absence of the boy's father, and the fractured topography of the wasted landscape simultaneously serve as external expressions of the youth's turbulent emotions and a rebuke to the existing social order. In Russian with subtitles. 85 min.
