This documentary follows six teenagers as they prepare for the World Magic Seminar, a global competition for young illusionists. For four of them (especially a comic duo from a Cape Town ghetto), performing magic is a social act that helps them overcome their loneliness and cynicism; for the other two, soulless student-council types from upper-middle-class U.S. suburbs, it's simply a skill to be honed and turned into a career. This tension between self-expression and professional advancement is fascinating material, but first-time director-editor J. Clay Tweel avoids the nuance that might have brought it to life. The movie owes more to reality TV than feature filmmaking, subordinating the various story lines to the simple question of who'll win the contest. In English and subtitled Japanese.
Director: J. Tweel
Producer: Ed Cunningham, Seth Gordon and Steven Klein
