Magnificent Coloring Day with Chance the Rapper, Skrillex, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, Young Thug, and others

When: Sat., Sept. 24, 1 p.m. 2016
Price: sold out
When Chance the Rapper announced the dates for this fall’s nationwide Magnificent Coloring World tour, his first to support May’s Coloring Book mixtape, the Chicago date listed no location. He hinted he was planning something special for his hometown, and he’s delivered: Magnificent Coloring Day has a better lineup than many of the bloated festivals that packed Chicago’s summer months, with Skrillex, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, and Tyler, the Creator (plus unannounced special guests). The bill hasn’t been Frankensteined together from parts of other major fests, as so often happens, but instead reflects Chance’s taste and personality—several of the acts appear on Coloring Book. Magnificent Coloring Day sold 50,000 tickets in about a week, and some might still be available: earlier this month, Chance announced on Twitter that he’d recovered 2,000 from scalpers and would put them back on the market. Chance has always been vocal about his love for the Chicago community, and it manifests itself clearly on Coloring Book. Beyond the obvious gospel influence and Chance’s religious turn, you can hear other ways the city has enriched the music’s sound, energy, and feeling: the references to footwork parties at roller rinks on “Juke Jam,” the shout-outs to local hip-hop stations Power 92 and WGCI on “Angels,” and the heartwarming, bittersweet trip through Chance’s childhood memories of running around Chatham on “Summer Friends.” As much as Magnificent Coloring Day is about Chance, he’s turned it into a celebration for all the kids who see themselves in him.
