Made in Dagenham

Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky) stars as Rita O'Grady, a real-life seamstress at Ford Motor Company's plant in east London who led her women coworkers in a strike for equal pay in 1968. Screenwriter William Ivory sticks closely to the Norma Rae template, standing up chauvinistic auto execs like tenpins so Hawkins can knock them down with her cheeky smile. Director Nigel Cole is best known for Calendar Girls (2003), another condescending exercise in you-go-girl uplift; among the fine actors bailing him out this time around are Bob Hoskins, Rosamund Pike, Richard Schiff, and Miranda Richardson.
