This stripped-down Candid Theater production, performed on a minimal set by a tight ensemble of seven actors wearing simple contemporary clothing, gives a fascinating, bleak, spiritually arid quality to Shakespeare's tale—as if the central issue of the play was not good vs. evil but hope vs. moral and spiritual exhaustion. Kevin V. Smith's underplayed, depressive take on Macbeth only underscores this interpretation. Sadly, though, director Mark Joseph Perry's daring concept is undermined by a seating configuration that muffles the sound and by an uneven cast, not all of whom seem to know how to deliver Shakespeare's poetry with confidence and power. There are standouts in the cast—Claire Fort, Leeann Zahrt, and Helen Manasses, as a fiery Lady Macbeth—but they cannot carry the show. (JHe)
