Commissioned by Lyric Opera as an outreach companion to its stunning home-stage production of The Passenger, this 90-minute klezmer opera is Holocaust light. Based on a harder-edged graphic novel of the same name by Israeli artist Rutu Modan, it’s the story of a survivor and her granddaughter who return to Poland to reclaim an apartment lost when their family was exterminated in World War II—and find romance in the process. Adapted by director Eric Einhorn and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, it has a lively score by Wlad Marhulets (played onstage by a six-piece band), a set that incorporates projected vintage images integral to the plot, and some major opera casting, with baritone James Maddalena as the apartment’s occupant and Jill Grove, whose acting chops match her formidable mezzo-soprano, as the grandmother. —Deanna Isaacs
