Lyric Opera’s El Pasado Nunca Se Termina

When: Sat., March 28, 7:30 p.m. and Sun., March 29, 2 p.m. 2015
Price: $29-$99
After last year’s well-received production of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, Lyric Opera’s outreach arm, Lyric Unlimited, is back with a newly commissioned mariachi opera. Like last year’s show, it’s the work of composer Jose “Pepe” Martinez and librettist Leonard Foglia, and the two performances on Lyric’s home stage will again feature Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. (Off-site previews in Pilsen and Waukegan were handled by Mariachi Aztlan.) A love-and-revolution story that reaches from Mexico in 1910 to present-day Chicago, El Pasado is family friendly and bilingual, with projected titles in Spanish and English. The cast includes Abigail Santos Villalobos, Daniel Montenegro, Paul La Rosa, and Ricardo Rivera. —Deanna Isaacs
