Taking A Man for All Seasons as their model, director Eric Till and screenwriters Bart Gavigan and Camille Thomasson make a game effort to dramatize the life of Martin Luther, father of the Reformation. Perhaps inevitably they've glossed over the theology in favor of politics, with the young monk (Joseph Fiennes) railing against licentious Rome and the selling of indulgences—an ecclesiastical Serpico. Solid performances by Fiennes, Jonathan Firth, and a frail but funny Peter Ustinov keep this watchable through Luther's dramatic stand before the imperial Diet of Worms, but it stumbles into Classics Illustrated territory with its hurried precis of the Peasants' War that followed. 121 min.
