Go ahead--wallow in the romance of Latin music and dance on a summer evening. At the Grant Park Music Festival this week, the Grant Park Orchestra not only plays classical takes on the fandango and Cuban dance music but also accompanies a program by Luna Negra, featuring artistic director Eduardo Vilaro's new Bossa Nova. Vilaro set the piece for 12 to four songs performed live by Brazilian jazz singer Luciana Souza, but says he doesn't listen to lyrics: "They have nothing to do with the dance. Once the music is in your head, the movement correlates with that." Using a more improvisational approach than usual, Vilaro choreographed Bossa Nova with company members Ricardo Garcia and Michelle Manzanales, who'll become Luna Negra's interim artistic director when Vilaro leaves August 1 to take the reins at New York's Ballet Hispanico. (Vilaro says he'll continue to create works for Luna Negra, and that the move "is more about collaboration than separation.") Filling out the dance card are excerpts from Vilaro's Cugat!, a tribute to the Cuban bandleader, and Alejandro Cervera's Tango Vitrola. --Laura Molzahn
