There were people doing interesting things with electro long before music critics and their plus-ones discovered and discarded the peacocks of the genre, and they haven't let up since. I'm talking specifically about the Dutch hard-asses who run Bunker, a label initially funded in part by selling acid; they spout bizarre, bitter missives thrashing the flimsiness of fashion-magazine electro and back up the finger wagging with their dark melodies and murderous beats. Swedish tweaker Luke Eargoggle (aka Lukas Pettersson) has done himself a favor by associating himself and Stilleben, the label he helped found, with this crew. Alone, Pettersson can be a little too Blade Runner--he's a fan of bleak, cavernous hooks, squishy-mud stomps, and minimalist Vocoder vocals--but his oddly placed hard beats always whip ass and his angular song structures are worth the initial mind-boggle. He's at his best, though, working with Bunker mainstay Legowelt as Catnip, a project in which the two are making sleazier tracks together than either would alone. Yes, Pettersson's another electronics dude without much stage presence, but he knows how to tease without frustrating--which is refreshing after all the nonstop instant gratification electro fans have grown accustomed to. Saturday, September 6, 10 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western; 773-276-3600.
