Karel Kachyna directed this warm, often funny 1979 Czech film, a family drama about an impoverished shoemaker and his three children living in Prague before World War II. The volatile father grows increasingly desperate as factory-made shoes erode his business and his family slides into poverty; meanwhile, the youngest of his teenage sons has a long romance with a girl who dreams of dancing and cinema and takes him to an almost enchanted garden. The father, the son, and his cynical older brother are all keenly drawn, but the film?s style is mannered and vapid. We feel the tight spaces of Prague life, but small camera movements, which at first seem to intensify the imagery, soon become meaningless busywork.
