To the editor:

I note that someone in your pages is defending God and the church [Letters, July 12, July 19, August 16, August 23]. It's time we asked Him a few questions. Like, what has He done for us lately?

Six billion of us down here, and half still live on less than two dollars a day, 50 million children starve every year, warring nations insist on first strike, Hitler, Genghis Khan--oops, that's us, too. Religion? How many wars, how many innocent victims? How about that 20th century?

The totals: soldiers 43 million, civilians 62 million. Where was God?

I saw the new play Galileo Galilei last night and wondered if we had advanced in learning in the five centuries since he went to the stake. Not much. Most Americans still believe that the sun travels around the earth instead of the reverse. (That's why half of all adults do not vote in presidential elections.) It's not apathy, it is ignorance! Another question for the supreme: If life appeared on our little planet about four billion years ago, and it wasn't until about five million years ago that man (a rational being) appeared, what did God do for that 3,995,000,000 years? Just asking.

Sincerely yours,
