Few rock bands from Central and South America can match the influence and popularity of this long-running combo from Buenos Aires, Argentina: with their paradigm-setting ska-punk hybrid, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs inspired countless imitators and earned a massive following. As they matured they adopted an invigorating “cultural cannibalism” similar to the ethos of Brazil’s tropicalia movement, and by the time of 1997’s Fabulosos Calavera they’d credibly and meaningfully absorbed elements of heavy metal, funk, rumba, soul, jazz, and surf music. Four years later, though, they went on an extended hiatus. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs ended their silence last year with La Luz del Ritmo (Nacional), and while it’s a decent effort, they don’t seem to have much to say—the album is diluted by covers (the Clash, Ian Dury) and by remakes of earlier tunes. Basically it’s a return to the band’s ska-punk roots, a step back from their bold late-career eclecticism—I hope they’re just finding their feet again, because back in the day they sounded better the more ambitious they got. At press time, every ticket bought for the Cadillacs’ show included a free ticket to Cafe Tacuba’s June 26 concert at the same venue. —Peter Margasak
