Los Campesinos! know misery and dancing aren’t antithetical, and that in fact combining the two can be a really excellent experience. The second album the Welsh septet released last year, We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed (Arts & Crafts), is dominated by lyrics about heartbreak, smoking, drinking, and heartbreak set to pogo-worthy indie rock with a heart of punk. They have the personnel for flourishes like glockenspiel and strings, but the group has less in common with serious lotsa-people bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor than they do with, say, 90s twee poppers Heavenly, and the more precious instruments are played with the same joyous abandon as everything else. And for all their serious attempts at transcendence, nothing the Arcade Fire’s ever done has moved me as much as hearing all the Campesinos yelling together, “There’s future in the fucking / But there’s no fucking future!” Titus Andronicus opens. —Miles Raymer
