Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, OnYou, ARU+BBJr

When: Fri., July 5, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $8 suggested donation
Like any good Krautrock-influenced psych band, Lorelle Meets the Obsolete are proficient at the art of bleeding: bleeding one crackling, dissonant electric echo into another, bleeding harsh feedback into mellow feedback, bleeding the gentle vocals of bassist and guitarist Lorena Quintanilla (aka Lorelle) into whatever recesses remain in the tracks. This Guadalajara duo—“the Obsolete” is drummer, backing vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Alberto Gonzales—recently released its second album, Corruptible Faces (Captcha), whose deep pockets of bass-and-drums groove seem to exhale thin, swirling clouds of guitars. At first “The In-Between” walks and talks like a straightforward rock song (though the vocals sound like they’re reverberating off the walls of a mile-long hallway), with a simple, hooky melody that could’ve made it the album’s single. But like much of Corruptible Faces, that catchy tune is just the siren song luring you into a several-minute-long all-out jam. Never a bad thing. —Kevin Warwick OnYou and ARU+BBJr open.
