Billy is a long-haul trucker with a side business running Mexicans into the U.S. When a young couple, Nini and Violetta, can't pay what they owe him for the trip north, Billy takes Violetta prisoner: unless Nini comes up with the money, he says, he'll sell Violetta to a brothel. Zayd Dohrn's script has an interesting side business of its own, exploring the ambiguous relationship between captor and prisoner, aggressor and victim. But, except for one extremely neat twist, much of his story comes off as either predictable or contrived in this Jackalope Theater staging. Director Kaiser Ahmed tries to synthesize some suspense by making us wait for what we know is coming. The teasing goes only so far, though. Sometimes what's supposed to be an oh-my moment finds you thinking, "It's about time," instead. Adam Brown is impressive as Billy's simpleminded adult son, Chris. —Tony Adler
