First Panic! at the Disco dropped their exclamation point, and now Loney, Dear (aka Emil Svanangen) has ditched his comma. If, say, Portugal. The Man get rid of their period it might be time to declare a full-blown trend of bands expunging useless or confusing punctuation from their names. But as relieved as I am to not have that comma nagging at the back of my brain (I had to deal with a lot of this sort of nonsense when I did the Reader’s music listings), I don’t think that’s the only reason Loney Dear’s first unpunctuated release, Dear John (Polyvinyl), strikes me as the best yet. The indie-electronic arrangements can get pretty dense, but they never smother the tender, pretty tunes—Svanangen’s got the ears of a techno producer but the heart of a 70s singer-songwriter, and his carefully deployed layers of synths elevate a moper like “Under a Silent Sea” to a bum-out of truly epic proportions. Anni Rossi opens. —Miles Raymer
