The awful crank comedy Spun (2002) still ranks as the most dehumanizing youth picture of the decade, but this New York drama by first-time director Hunter Richards is a close second. A shaggy hipster (Chris Evans) and a brusque British executive (Jason Statham) hook up for a coke sale and wind up crashing a party at a swanky loft; hiding in a spacious upstairs bathroom, they spend the next hour of the movie doing blow and raging about their petty problems. Evans is haunted by flashbacks of his fantasy-fuck ex-girlfriend (Jessica Biel), who arrives downstairs as the party's guest of honor; Statham savors his own bile as he recounts his nasty S-M activities. After this torrent of nihilism the ex-sweethearts finally confront each other and Biel blurts out, “I'm afraid I'm falling in love with you again!” Be very afraid. R, 92 min.
