In 1954, Lolita Lebron led fellow members of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party in an armed attack on the U.S. House of Representatives. If you’re curious to know why she did it, or how desperate things might have been in Puerto Rico at the time, you’ll learn little from Migdalia Cruz’s incessantly tangential 1995 play. Cruz lets flights of poetic fancy lead her anywhere except into the heart of the matter, and her politics are simplistic and reductive (Lolita is little beyond a zealous patriot). Director Marcela Muñoz struggles to makes sense of the fundamentals—like who or where half the characters are—and her exuberant but unpolished cast can’t extract convincing psychological states from Cruz’s needlessly florid dialogue. —Justin Hayford
