Drama
As a youthful, androgynous-looking Salvador Dali, Twilight star Robert Pattinson injects some much-needed life into this stodgy 2008 biopic about Spanish writer Federico Garcia Lorca (Javier Beltran). Dali is already mad as a hatter when he arrives in Madrid in 1922 and joins a circle of students that includes the closeted Lorca and the homophobic Luis Buñuel (Matthew McNulty). Ponderous, heavily accented debates about genius and politics punctuate Lorca's long, painfully reticent courtship of the opportunistic Dali. Director Paul Morrison forfeits any meaningful statement about art for a pedestrian coming-out story, based in part on Dali's unreliable, self-aggrandizing memoirs. R, 112 min.
