Younger audiences may be more familiar with Amy Sedaris and Tracey Ullman, but Lily Tomlin set the bar for character comedy. In An Evening of Classic Lily Tomlin the dramatis personae from Broadway, TV, and film include Judith Beasley, the "semi-non-orgasmic" housewife from Calumet City, and Trudy, the mind-expanding bag-lady star of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe. My favorites are two Laugh-In creations, Edith Ann, the truth-telling five-and-a-half-year-old, and Ernestine, the snorting, not-so-gracious telephone operator, who was original even when telephone humor (cf. Bob Newhart and Shelley Berman) was not. This is a chance to experience the greatest hits of a multiple Tony and Emmy winner who created some of the funniest characters in American humor.
