Since the local underground hip-hop scene erupted a few years back it’s been clear that Chicago plays host to a large number of young stars—and that those MCs made their distinct visions into realities thanks to a team of up-and-comers, including singer Lili K. Her golden voice has elevated tracks by some of the city’s best (Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, Tree), though her involvement in the scene only accounts for a fragment of her output. Lili’s self-released debut, the forthcoming solo album Ruby, shows off her personable, easygoing charm and leans on her background in jazz and soul. It’s heavy on the side of neosoul—the gentle, elegant kind that moves at a comfortably slow pace and leaves plenty of room for Lili’s subtle, sumptuous vocal shifts. She shows her range on the dynamic single “I Don’t Want You No More,” which starts with a laid-back vibe—suitable for pairing with a relaxing dinner by candlelight—that’s prominent on much of Ruby, then transitions into a blustery, upbeat melody, with Lili’s controlled warble giving way to a smoldering guitar solo. The track follows “Pour Some Shuga,” which might be my favorite of the bunch, partially because Lili takes a pop phrase I’ve long associated with Def Leppard and reimagines it in her own luxurious language. —Leor Galil
