For a while in the aughts, Lil Wayne was not only the best rapper alive but also one of the top musicians working in any style of pop music, combining the highest standards of quality with an unprecedented quantity. He was dropping classic mixtapes and label albums as often as most other rappers changed their pants, and each one pushed hip-hop’s stylistic boundaries out a little further till they were broad enough to accommodate a self-described Martian who was shaping up to be rap’s promethazine-fueled answer to Jimi Hendrix. But a few years ago Wayne seems to have been knocked off balance—maybe by his ambitious but deeply flawed rock-oriented album in 2010, maybe by the prison stint that followed, maybe by the cessation of his legendary drug intake—and he has yet to find it again. He’s still featured on a half dozen or so songs on the Hot 100 at any given time, and he remains reliably entertaining, but that incredible period where he could seemingly do no wrong might be over for good. —Miles Raymer T.I., 2 Chainz, and G-Eazy open.
