Lightning Bolt, Reeyees, Guzzlemug

When: Sat., Sept. 15, 10 p.m. 2012

Lightning Bolt will always belong on the floor in front of the stage, surrounded by kids with yellow-pitted T-shirts in some broken-down art space whose dirty walls balloon and contract with the insane surges of Brian Chippendale's hopped-up drumming. The Rhode Island duo's primal noise-rock continues to embody DIY fortitude, no matter how creaky their joints are getting or what Pitchfork stage they're playing next year. Chippendale (with his scuzzy, demented microphone mask) and bandmate Brian Gibson (with his incredibly deformed "bass" tone) are still simultaneously pushing forward and hanging on to their roots nearly two decades in—you can hear both on the EP Oblivion Hunter, out Tue 9/25 on Load, which collects rarities and "lost" tracks from 2008 (maybe material that didn't make the cut for 2009's Earthly Delights?). And guess what, it sounds like Lightning Bolt: heavy, mind-bendingly bizarre grooves that crackle and scream with gusts of feedback and bouts of Chippendale-induced hyperactivity. Stuff some toilet paper in your ears and wear an outfit you could give a shit about, just like you did when you saw 'em ten years ago. The Bottle's going to get loud, and it's going to be a mess. —Kevin Warwick Ree-Yees and Guzzlemug open.
