Leaving Lara Croft: Tomb Raider behind her, Angelina Jolie goes for blond, playing a happy-talk TV news reporter whose careerist attitude is shaken when a street prophet tells her she'll die within a week. In the hands of Preston Sturges, this could have been the basis for some snappy mordant comedy, but Stephen Herek (Mr. Holland's Opus) sees only fields of corn, winding up with one of those pseudodeep stories (e.g., American Beauty) that Hollywood takes for spiritual. Jolie cuts loose in the polite way a scruffy single dad (Edward Burns) allows; the seasoned supporting cast—including Stockard Channing, Tony Shalhoub, and James Gammon—is wasted. Written by John Scott Shepherd and Dana Stevens. 97 min.
