Life as a House

The overarching metaphor here—a builder of architectural models finally decides it's time to build a real house and a relationship with his estranged teenage son—is awfully heavy-handed. So writer Mark Andrus and director Irwin Winkler set most of the action on a cliff overlooking the ocean, where the cinematography becomes a tool of deception—it's more evocative than the characterizations or plot. Many people leave the theater sobbing, but having your buttons pushed isn't the same as having your thoughts provoked. With Kevin Kline, Hayden Christensen, and Kristin Scott Thomas. 128 min.
