Max Ophuls, one of the most original directors ever to guide a camera, had his first success with this 1932 version of Arthur Schnitzler's famous play of doomed love. For the first time Ophuls was able to re-create the turn-of-the-century Vienna that would be the setting of his greatest films—Letter From an Unknown Woman, The Earrings of Madame de . . . , Lola Montes.
