L.I.E.

Howie's mother has died in an accident on the Long Island Expressway—a stretch of highway that runs through this realist fairy tale without much enhancing its meaning—and his father, who's distracted by a new sexual relationship, is implicated in a criminal investigation. The 15-year-old's search for someone to replace his parents takes him down a circuitous path strewn with suburban ennui, petty crime, and unrequited love. Stephen Ryder and Gerald Cuesta wrote the screenplay with director Michael Cuesta; with Paul Franklin Dano and Brian Cox. 97 min.
