Re: “Artist Rutherford Chang's "We Buy White Albums" and the origins of fandom

Hatsune Miku is an avatar and voicebank for the Vocaloid software created by Yamaha, and was expessly designed to appeal to indy musicians on a tight budget. (compare the $150 price tag for the software to the cost of hiring a vocalist and renting a studio) So, if nearly all of her music is composed by indy artists, amateur musicians, and hobbyists, mission accomplished! The other artworks, such as illustrations and videos, were completely spontaneous. One devoted software engineer in japan even created Miku Miku Dance, a 3D animation program tailored for making music videos. It's freeware - no charge to download and use it, and is used in the creation of the majority of Miku's music videos.

As for the pornography thing, please don't make it sound as if it's the main point of being a fan. Crypton Future Media, the creators of Hatsune Miku, do forbid it in their license, but they understand it's going to happen regardless. Compared to other properties, the percentage of "adult" themes in works involving Miku is much, much lower. Most fans understand that Miku is about music, and the majority of works reflect that.
