Letters/X | Apollo Theater | Theater & Performance, Valentine's Day | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through March 2 2013
Price: $12-$15
Now in its tenth year, this annual anti-Valentine's Day cabaret doesn't need elaborate fictions to demonstrate what pitiable fools love—or lust—makes of us. Anthony Roberts simply collects real-life breakup messages for his script, with devastating results. The show's title is something of an anachronism, by the way: this year's material derives almost entirely from e-mails, voice mails, and texts. The one actual paper-and-ink letter is a romantic gesture thwarted by unreadable handwriting. Matthew Zaradich directs the five charming ensemble members, who can handle everything from a tween girl's purple prose to the cheery venom of a divorcee ("You've been seeing her for a year now, right? Things must be getting seeee-ri-ous!") The cast commit to the show's musical interludes with maximum enthusiasm and considerable talent, though they could use better volume control in the Apollo Studio's close quarters. —Keith Griffith
