Plenty of hicksploitationists have tried to mine Americana for the sake of snarkiness--I doubt the stereotype of the hairy hillbilly carries any real menace anymore, considering how much it's been sillified. So bless the pan-southern, Nashville-based Legendary Shack Shakers for sounding like they drink real esophagus-searing moonshine, handle real rattlesnakes, and take pride in being part of the reason why urbanites get scared when they hear a banjo in the woods. Their new album, Believe (Yep Roc), is a continuation and refinement of their formula: a little boogie, a little hoedown, a little polka, a little honky-tonk, a little squealing like a pig. It's a hell-raising party record like Southern Culture on the Skids used to make, but with more firepower and less slapstick. The Saps open. Sat 3/5, 11:30 PM, Abbey Pub, 3420 W. Grace, 773-478-4408 or 866-468-3401, $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
