Legendary Pink Dots

This year marks the Legendary Pink Dots' silver anniversary, but Edward Ka-Spel and his merry band won't be celebrating it with a breakthrough album or retrospective tour. The idiosyncratic path they've followed over the years might've swung them perilously close to having a goth-club hit on rare occasions, but the group has never traversed very far from the same semipopular space as space-rock lifers like Gong and decade-spanning cultsy clusterfucks like Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. These days it seems like the only occult-psych-pop records considered archetypal were produced by lone weirdos who dropped two or three gems somewhere in the fog of the 70s only to be discovered decades later, to much reissuing and rejoicing, as bus drivers in Buffalo or naked holy men in Kathmandu. But let's hear it for the likes of Ka-Spel--folks who've kept their actual noses to the grindstone, getting better and better at being so intricately, gracefully, spiritually strange. The new Your Children Placate You From Premature Graves (ROIR) is loaded with gorgeous folk, pulses of slinky 80s goth pop, whole long stretches that sound like the extradruggy bits of Pink Floyd records without all the distracting music, and creepy moments where Ka-Spel breaks the fourth wall and talks in your head. It may not sound glamorous or romantic to the outside world, but if you step into this hallowed space, it starts to sound like something well worth spending a quarter century to build. Tue 6/13, 9 PM, Double Door, 1572 N. Milwaukee, 773-489-3160 or 312-559-1212, $15.
